There are multiple reports of companies freezing hiring right now, and in fact, Candor has created a live list of companies who are hiring, freezing hiring, and laying employees off. Just some of the examples of major companies freezing hiring include American Express, Edward Jones, and Trivago. However, many companies that hire hourly employees are either still hiring or even increasing their hiring to keep up with consumer needs. These types of industries include grocery, finance, and health.
If your company is still hiring, you have probably got some questions about recruiting during COVID-19. Here is what experts advise.
Can I Do Online Interviews?
Yes. In fact, you should. You may not know where the candidate is coming from and who they may have been in contact with. You can do free online interviews using:
- Skype
- Zoom (40-minute time limit)
- Google Hangouts
When conducting online interviews, be sure that the candidate has the correct information to connect with you. For instance, if you are going to use Zoom, the candidate needs to have:
- the Zoom meeting link
- the meeting ID
- the password
For Skype and Google Hangouts, they are going to need an account. You also need to make sure they have a computer with a working built-in webcam and microphone. If the candidate does not have that, do not pass over them. A phone call works just as fine.
Can I Test Applicants for Coronavirus?
Yes, but legally, if you test one applicant, you are required to test all them – do not discriminate. You are also allowed to:
- Delay the start date of an applicant with COVID-19 symptoms
- Withdraw job offers from applicants who have COVID-19 and needs to start immediately
- Withdraw job offers from applicants who refuse to work remotely
Can I Require Working Remotely?
Yes!
